Let’s see. You have no name recognition, you can’t sell books, people will say. Don’t believe them. There are, however, many reasons. But I don’t wish to enumerate them all this morning. So, I’ll focus on one.
In the business of making money, too often NAMES sell, not the content of your gut-wrenching story. Sadly so! It is a biased attitude literary agents and publishers alike will never share with you. In parts, it’s true. Like in most entertainment venues, the literary industry is no different, because the psychology of readers has not changed. Famous authors like Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Maya Angelou, Alice Walker are among the name-recognition elite. Many readers, especially in academia, would love to be identified with them, and there is always an intellectual pride to showcase their books in your library.
Don’t feel intimidated. Breaking-through is the key. There was a time, these folks were the no-bodies. That gives hopes. Don’t’ take my words. Read their bios, and you’ll see. Don’t feel helpless, and most importantly, don’t be the harmless prey in the boogeyman’ fatal nest. There are plenty of dishonest people out there who will tell you they know what “the problems are.” And they’ll charge you thousands of dollars for developmental editing, for countless revising and more…
But how do you establish yourself as THE impeccable writer? Here is the key: Determination, determination, determination. Don’t take NO for an answer. NEVER. Keep trying until a publisher comes along. Making sure, however, that your story is compelling, well-developed, well-written and that your heart is well suited in it. Tell me what you think…. Leave me a message….
